Dr. Jim Haas tells us that working with DVI at The Trudi Birger Dental Clinic in Jerusalem is a fulfilling experience on its own, but when a father-in-law/son-in-law team do this together it brings another dimension to the already rewarding experience. Here they are, together at DVI, treating two brothers whose family members have been patients of DVI for 20 years. The docs have made the trip together eight times!

We get to use our training and clinical skills while working with a well-trained and compassionate staff, and meet dentists from all over the world who share our passion to help others. It’s an opportunity we look forward to taking every year.
My father-in-law, Donald Kalfus, had heard about the Trudi Birger Clinic years ago and had been interested in working with the children of Jerusalem in a place that is open to families of every religion and background. So, when we traveled to Israel in 2009 for our family vacation, we stopped in to visit them. The following year we started our tradition.
Work schedules at the clinic allow us time to explore historic and religious sights as well as to see many of our Israeli friends whom we’ve met over the years. In addition, we’ve been able to arrange our trips to allow us to experience different seasons in Israel, and there’s always something new to see. The icing on the cake is the use of an apartment that is walking distance to the clinic. We don’t feel like typical tourists when we come to Jerusalem–we feel like we’re part of the community.
My father-in-law and I have found that our shared love of Israel and dentistry makes this annual trip as much fun to plan as it is to experience. We continue to enjoy the volunteer work, hiking and exploring, and always look forward to our annual journey to the Holy Land. We encourage all our dental colleagues to consider participating in this rewarding opportunity. Whether you join us for one trip or once a year, we’re sure that you’ll agree that the DVI experience is not to be missed! Click to learn more about volunteering at DVI.
