We love sharing the stories of the heroes who are the heart of DVI – our wonderful dentist volunteers.

Dr. Yulia Medovar is an immigrant from the Ukraine who arrived in Israel with her husband in 1995 after earning their dental degrees. She began volunteering in the year 2000 and quickly connected to DVI and to the purpose and mission of Trudi Birger. She cares deeply about DVI’s young patients.

Yulia was inspired and moved by Trudi and all of her incredible efforts. While volunteering at DVI, she has seen many youth grow up, gain confidence, study and improve themselves thanks to the care, love, and support they received as patients. She has witnessed the amazing way in which DVI empowers youth to escape the cycle of poverty.

Three dental assistants who work with Dr. Medovar were once patients at the clinic. What incredible stories! Three kids who had nothing, who weren’t even able to dream of dental care, never mind a career, ended up with both. All three also gave back to their country by serving in the army. They learned to care for themselves and for others. And, they learned that they were worthy of the treatment that was provided and the compassion that our shown to them at DVI. Now they are caring for others.

For 20 years, Yulia has dedicate herself to DVI. Like you, she wants to help kids heal, succeed, and smile. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, we can count on her to help DVI’s patients.

We know that our supporters are very smart. You want to know that your donation is actually going to help someone in need. As Dr. Medovar says, “When you donate money and you don’t know where it goes, it’s one thing. When you see who you’re helping, and the change it makes in them, it is very powerful. It gives both dentists and patients inspiration – we’re making a better world here at DVI.”

Your support of AFDVI allows us to provide over $150,000 in grants to DVI each year for the benefit of youth and seniors in need. Your dollars go far. In 2019 alone, DVI provided over $1.4 million in care to 2,711 youth and 154 seniors. Thanks to dentist volunteers from around the world, and local dentists like Yulia, DVI is able to make those dollars work harder and provide the kind of care that changes lives every day.

Thank you for your support over the years and especially in this particularly difficult year. Please consider another gift today. Your donation of $180 (less than 50 cents a day) will allow DVI to treat one young person for an entire year! Help one or more children today. They need you and we need you, now more than ever.

Ready, set, smile!  Can you meet our challenge?  In this year of uncertainty, we can all use a smile!  And a smile that helps us provide free dental care to those in need will make more smiles.  We sense a theme here!

THE CHALLENGE:  Donate $32 (one dollar for each pearly white) in the name of someone who has made you smile when you needed it the most this year.  Then challenge that person to do the same.  Let’s make a chain of smiles around the world and raise funds for PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for the DVI Dental Clinic!

OR

CLICK HERE TO DONATE ON OUR GOFUNDME CAMPAIGN

The Dental Volunteers for Israel (DVI) Clinic in Jerusalem provides free dental care and oral health education to underserved, special needs and at-risk youth ages 4-26.  It also provides free dentures to needy seniors and Holocaust survivors.  The work of the clinic is life-changing for many who can’t afford to get treatment.  Each year, over 2,700 children and young adults receive free dental care, and over 100 seniors, half of them Holocaust survivors, receive free dentures at DVI thanks to support from our generous donors, foundations, and corporate sponsors, and our wonderful dentist volunteers from around the world.

The clinic has remained open during the COVID-19 pandemic to meet the needs of its patients, but expenses have increased due to the amount of additional PPE they have had to purchase.  We need your help, and your smiles, to ease this temporary burden on the clinic.

TAKE THE CHALLENGE!  Shout out someone who made you smile; a family member, a friend, a colleague, your dentist, a celebrity, an essential worker, a first responder, a mentor…anyone.  Then, challenge them to do the same.  Each $32 (or more) gift goes a long way to helping those who need us most, especially in this tough time.

We know that better days are ahead.  Let’s get those days started by helping those in need smile today!

Donate now, then post a picture with your smile maker and use the hashtags #SmileChallengePPE and #SmileForPPE on social media to challenge your friends and help us make more smiles!

  • Dental professionals who already know a lot about these topics but are excited to pick up dozens of pearls from experts.
  • Dental professionals who don’t plan to ever implement sleep or TMD in their practices, but want to know what to look for in order to best refer their patients for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Shmuel, one of DVI’s elderly patients in the Smiles for Seniors program, returned to the clinic on June 2nd for the first time since Israel’s stay-at-home orders took effect in mid-March. Senior patients are now allowed to receive elective treatments and Shmuel was very happy to be back to continue the care necessary to receive his free dentures.

Gabay, a senior with special needs also returned on that day.  Half of the senior patients seen at DVI on June 2nd had been mid-treatment when the shutdown occurred. They are all extremely excited to know that they will get their new dentures soon.  The compassionate care our seniors receive will lift their spirits and restore their smiles.

In the first three years (2016-2019) of the Smiles for Seniors program, 395 indigent seniors, half of them Holocaust survivors, received free dentures thanks to our supporters. That’s over $1 million in care for those who were suffering due to tooth loss, or broken or ill-fitting dentures. Today they are smiling and very thankful for the gift they have received!

Your donation today will allow DVI to continue to treat patients like Shmuel and Gabay. Jerusalem’s seniors need our help. Change a life today with your gift!

Dr. Harry Harczstark made Aliyah from Teaneck, NJ in November 2019. Since his Bar Mitzvah, he had dreamed of moving to Israel and the time had finally arrived. He decided to start his new life in Israel by volunteering at the DVI Clinic. He wasted no time; volunteering in January, just one month after his arrival!

When the Coronavirus pandemic hit and international dentists were forced to cancel their flights to Israel, the clinic called Dr. H and asked if he would fill in. Dr. H came through! He told us, “I heard that dentists from abroad couldn’t get here. I considered the fact that I’m older and at risk. But, when they told me that DVI would have to temporarily close its doors if volunteer dentists were unable to help, I decided to trust to HaShem and collect my mitzvoth.

Thanks to acts of kindness from local dentists like Dr. H, the clinic has remained open to care for the needs of patients with dental emergencies. One of the patients Dr. H saw during this time was a young man whom we will call Y. His family has a long history with DVI. Y and his five siblings are patients of DVI and have had many treatments throughout the years, including general check-ups, x-rays, and oral hygiene treatments. They have had cavities filled, root canals and extractions. All of this care has been possible thanks to the kindness of volunteers like Dr. H and the generosity of financial supporters like you.

Y’s mother noted how special DVI is, “DVI’s warmth and genuine concern for their patients in conjunction with the high level of dental care my children receive here are true blessings.” Together we are providing relief from dental pain and improving the oral and overall health of entire families; giving them hope for a brighter, healthier future.
We have seen many acts of kindness in our own communities and throughout the world in the last few months. You can do something today that will help kids like Y feel better right away. Help us heal those who need us most in this trying time. Please give today!

Meet Dr. Diana Gonzalez. She is a DVI dentist volunteer who lives in Israel. As international volunteers were forced to cancel travel to Israel due to the COVID-19 outbreak, she answered the call to help. Dr. Gonzalez first volunteered at DVI in February and jumped back in when we needed her the most. She has wholeheartedly offered to volunteer at the clinic whenever necessary during this period and we are extremely grateful for her compassion and kindness!

Dr. Gonzalez graduated from dental school in Colombia, South America in 2004 and began treating patients there and thinking about volunteering her services. She had heard about DVI and in 2016 contacted the clinic to express her desire to help. At the time, there was unrest in the region and she was concerned about her safety. A friend put her in touch with a young man who lived in Jerusalem’s Old City, knowing that he would be able to give her more information about traveling to Israel. They began writing to each other and he invited her to go to Jerusalem for Christmas to see for herself how safe and special it really was. She took him up on the invitation and the rest is history! They fell in love and married in September of 2018, and Dr. Gonzalez now resides with her husband in the Old City.

DVI really does bring people together in many ways!

CELEBRATE OUR VOLUNTEERS WITH YOUR GIFT!

Help us celebrate Dr. Gonzalez, the many volunteers who are stepping up to help right now, and all those who have given their time and skills throughout 40 years to help ease the suffering of Jerusalem’s needy youth and seniors. Your financial support allows them to provide desperately needed dental care at no cost to DVI’s patients.

Please give today! Help us continue to make smiles at DVI during this difficult time and beyond.
